Dry eye syndrome is a more frequent problem than one would think. This condition affects people more as we get older, spend a lot of time on the computer, or just during contact lens wear.
As a matter of fact, the most common reason people get LASIK is because their eyes are too dry to comfortably wear contact lenses. Dry eyes can be not just annoying but sometimes dangerous to eye health.
What are the symptoms of dry eyes?
Common symptoms of dry eyes include:
- Foreign body sensation
- Fluctuations in vision
Can TV screens or computer screens cause dry eye?
Prolonged screen viewing and reading can lead to dry eyes. When we view our televisions or computer, the number times we blink is significantly reduced, which causes tear film to evaporate. Without the tear film and with heavy eye strain, the eyes are prone to irritation and dryness.
Can dry eye lead to loss of vision?
If dry eye goes untreated, the irritation and redness can significantly increase and has the potential to lead to corneal scarring. Complete loss of vision is nothing to be concerned about. However, untreated dry eyes could lead to eye damage.
At our near Detroit office, we are skilled at diagnosing and offering a variety of treatments that can help.
Treatment options differ and may include artificial tear drops, plugging the tear drainage ducts, medicine to help make more tears or even steroid drops for inflammation. In any case, you won’t want to ignore these symptoms as they can truly affect the quality of your life.
Dry eyes can occur because we are not making enough tears or due to poor tear quality. The correct problem needs to be identified and corrected to relieve the symptoms.
