Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve which carries sight from the eye to the brain.
Glaucoma* is the second most common cause of blindness in the United States. It has been referred to as the “silent thief of sight” since it has no symptoms until it is too late.
Glaucoma can affect anyone at any age. If you have a family history of glaucoma you are at an even higher risk than most people. A comprehensive eye exam is required to detect glaucoma.
Since glaucoma is a very treatable disease, blindness would be rare if everyone had regular eye exams. Glaucoma cannot be cured but treatment will slow or prevent vision loss. Treatment usually involves eye drops but laser and surgery are sometimes needed.
*It may be associated with a high eye pressure, but not always. At the beginning of the disease there are no symptoms. As it progresses we slowly start to lose our peripheral vision. Since we are not aware of our peripheral vision until most of it is gone we don’t notice it until we are almost blind.
